The newly launched Collaborative Research Center 765 (SFB 765) “Multivalency as Chemical Organizational and Operational Principle: New Architectures, Functions, and Applications� at the Freie Universitaet Berlin with the integrated Research Training Group (Graduiertenkolleg) “Multivalency in Chemistry and Biochemistry� funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) offers

4 Doctoral Scholarships

for interdisciplinary research projects in the fields of chemistry, biology, materials science, and biophysics.

The Collaborative Research Center 765 with the integrated Graduate Research Training Group is jointly run by two Berlin universities, Freie Universitaet and Humboldt-Universita et zu Berlin, as well as by the Leibniz-Institut für Molekulare Pharmakologie (FMP), Zuse-Institut, and Charité-Universitaet smedizin, Berlin. Academic program: The Graduate Research Training Program distinguishes itself through joint teaching and supervision of the graduates. Each Ph.D. will be supervised by one of the collaborating researchers and two other mentors. The core teaching program consists of interdisciplinary lectures and seminars. Terms of Grant: The scholarships will be awarded for one year; the earliest start is on August 1, 2009. After one year, scholars may apply for funding and internship extension through their research groups. Doctoral fellows will receive a stipend of € 1.000 per month. An additional material cost allowance of € 103 per month will also be paid. A child care allowance may be granted if applicable.

Application: Applicants are asked to submit a cover letter with the sub-project number and name of the group leader with whom the applicant would like to work, as well as their curriculum vitae, copies of their qualifying academic certifications, and two letters of recommendation from academic teachers. Applicants should have gained a top place in their graduating classes and hold a master’s degree or equivalent in chemistry, biochemistry, biology or pharmacy. Candidates have to meet the requirements which would qualify them for entry to a doctoral program at the respective institute. Students will be chosen on the basis of their previous grades and academic references. Applicants should also have a solid proficiency in the English language.

The SFB 765 encourages, in particular, women as well as disabled persons to apply for the fellowships.

Deadline: The deadline for application is May 15, 2009. During the first half of June candidates may be invited for interviews.

PhD Studentship in Inorganic Chemistry, University of Bonn

The Institute of Inorganic Chemistry of the University of Bonn (research group of Prof. Dr. A.C. Filippou) seeks candidates for Ph.D. student positions. The positions are one year initial appointments with the possibility of contract extension of up to 4 years. The salary follows the german law for public institutions and is according to the standard rate TV-L E13/2.

The group of Prof. Filippou is engaged in molecular transition metal and main group chemistry, in organometallic chemistry and in catalysis.

The topics of the Ph.D. thesis projects are:

    * Dinitrogen activation at electron-rich metal centers
    * Triple bonds of transition metals with the elements C-Pb
    * Metal-centered C-C coupling reactions of electron-rich alkynes

Required qualifications are: diploma or master degree above average with strong interest in synthetic inorganic or organometallic chemistry (a graduate degree in inorganic molecular chemistry is preferred), good background in common analytical and spectroscopic methods, fluent English or German, good interpersonal communication skills, and interest to teach and work with students.

Scholarships in Chemistry on Metabolomic and Proteomic Studie

The PhD project is oriented towards the application of mass spectrometry (MS) based metabolomics and proteomics methods in a combination with Chemometric Bioinformatics:

   * to find biomarkers for tumour progression and therapeutic response in order to reveal new therapeutic options for brain malignancies.

   * to find biomarkers assessable in blood for early tumour detection, prognostication and prediction of treatment response for brain malignancies.

At the Department of Chemistry, Computational Life Science Cluster (CLiC), Biological Chemistry in collaboration with Departments of Neurosurgery and Oncology.

Computational Life Science Cluster (CLiC) at Umeå University is part of an ongoing effort to further stimulate and advance computer based modelling, tools and strategies in experimental sciences.

The PhD project is oriented towards the application of mass spectrometry (MS) based metabolomics and proteomics methods in a combination with Chemometric Bioinformatics:

   * to find biomarkers for tumour progression and therapeutic response in order to reveal new therapeutic options for brain malignancies.

   * to find biomarkers assessable in blood for early tumour detection, prognostication and prediction of treatment response for brain malignancies.

This study is a part of an interdisciplinary project between Chemistry, Pathology, Neurosurgery, Oncology and UPSC at Umeå University, which focus on the metabolomics and proteomics targeting of three different tumour groups: brain, prostate and ovarial. The research group consists of clinicians and researchers specialized in the mentioned areas of cancer, together with research expertise in metabolomics, proteomics and chemometric bioinformatics.

The recruitment procedure will follow the Higher Education Ordinance (“Högskoleförordningen� Chapters 5 and 7). Prerequisites include either i)240 ECTS credits (swe. Högskolepoäng) of higher education studies of which 60 should be on an advanced level (Master level) with focus on chemistry, or ii) 120 Swedish (old) credits (swe. Poäng; corresponding to 180 ECTS credits) of higher education studies if they were taken before July 1, 2007 or equivalent competence.

Advanced course(s), or other experience in MS based metabolomics/ proteomics, chemometrics and brain malignancies are of advantage, as well as evidence of proficiency in written and oral communication in English.

PhD Theoretical Chemistry / Chemical Physics (2x2 years)

Job description
The candidate will prepare a PhD thesis within the framework of a project entitled "From orbital imaging to molecular quantum similarity in momentum space" (financial support by the Fund for scientific Research _ Flanders and the University of Hasselt). The first goal of the project is to develop and apply theoretical methods for quantitative interpretations of advanced “orbital imaging� experiments employing Electron Momentum Spectroscopy (EMS), taking into into account conformational mobility as well as electron correlation and relaxation - EMS is a powerful technique which enables straightforward determinations of orbital momentum densities from an angular analysis of electron-impact ionization & scattering cross-sections. A second aspect of the project pertains to the calculation from these densities of new criteria of molecular similarity, of relevance for the pharmaceutical industry, and of efficient descriptors of the chemical
reactivity, in collaboration with the division of quantum chemistry at the University of Ghent (Prof. P. Bultinck). This proposed research project is a continuation of a PhD thesis that has been awarded by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemists.

Diploma
Academic license (4 years), master (5 years) of equivalent diploma (bvb. DEA) in chemistry, physics, or materials sciences, or civil engineering in chemistry, physics, or materials sciences. Students who will complete their study this year can also apply.

Offer
Scholarship for a PhD in Theoretical Chemistry / Chemical Physics within the research group of Michael S. Deleuze (awards by the World Association of Theoretically Oriented Chemists and by the Royal Flemisch Academy of Belgium for Sciences and Arts). The scholarship is available for a period of 4 years. It consists of a first appointment of 2 years, followed by a prolongation of 2 years unless negative evaluation of the first period. The scholarship is subject to social security.
