Job description
The ICS offers fully funded PhD scholarships for a variety of more than 30 projects, wich are mentioned on the ICS website. The PhD students will be appointed for a full four-year period in which the graduates will work on an individual project, leading to a doctoral dissertation. The programme (in English) begins September 1st, 2009 and applications should arrive at the ICS before May 1, 2009.

Excellent candidates who recently graduaÂted in one of the social sciences. Graduates in Mathematics, Statistics or Economics are also invited to apply.

Research at the Department of Sociology is realized within the context of the overarching research programme ‘Social Networks, Solidarity and Inequality’, of the ICS. The Interuniversity Center for Social Science Theory and Methodology (ICS) is an internationally renowned research and graduate training school, located in the NetherÂlands at the Universities of Groningen, Utrecht and Nijmegen.
The Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences carries out relevant scientific research of a very high quality and provides challenging academic teaching in the fields of human behaviour and society. The Faculty’s research and teaching contribute to a critical reflection on society, human behaviour and their interconnection. More than 5,800 students follow a broad range of undergraduate and graduate (academic and research) programmes, set up by a collaboration of five departments: interdisciplinary social science, sociology, methodology and statistics, pedagogical and educational sciences, and psychology. As a result of the Faculty’s wide variety of programmes and innovative and groundbreaking research, some 650 staff members have ample opportunity to benefit from each other’s knowledge and expertise.

Conditions of employment
Estimated maximum salary per month: eur 2500 - 3000
Salary: scale 10.
Maximum salary amount in Euro's a month 2612
Employment basis: Temporary for specified period
Duration of the contract: 4 years
Maximum hours per week: 38
Additional conditions of employment:
The appointment of 1.0 fte is for a specified period of 4 years.
The initial appointment of 1.0 fte is for a specified period of a year. An appraisal interview in order to review whether you meet the job requirements will determine whether the position will be continued after that year.
The generous scholarships fully cover tuition, research and living expenses.
The salary amounts to € 2,042 per month before taxes in the first year of the appointment, rising to € 2,612 per month before taxes in the fourth year. There are no tuition fees.
