The Sustainability Science Program at Harvard University’s Center for International Development offers doctoral, post-doctoral, and mid-career fellowships in Sustainability Science. The fellowships are tenable at the Center for International Development during Harvard’s academic year beginning in September 2010. Fellowships are available for 10 months (September 2010-May 2011), 12 months (September 2010-August 2011), the fall semester (September-December 2010), the spring semester (February-May 2011), or for two academic years (post-doctoral fellows only) (September 2010-August 2012).

Graduate Research Position

Department of Biological Sciences, University of Alabama

A graduate research assistantship (M.S. or Ph.D.) is available for a student to conduct research on coastal marsh responses to climate change and rising sea levels. The project will involve fieldwork and greenhouse experimentation examining interactive effects of elevated CO2, sedimentation and flooding on vegetation responses and elevation change.

This project is being conducted as part of a larger research program investigating the persistence of coastal marshes to global climate change and is funded by the USGS Climate Change Program. The student will work with researchers at the University of Alabama and the USGS National Wetlands Research Center. The successful applicant will be able to propose additional research to meet his or her specific interests, provided it fits within the broader goals of the program.

Applicants should have a demonstrated interest in wetlands, ecosystem ecology, or climate change. Preference will be given to those with experience conducting field or greenhouse research. In addition to stipend and health benefits, this position includes funds for fieldwork, sample processing, and some travel.

Research Associate, Stanford University

RESEARCH ASSOCIATE
Experimental High Energy Physics

The Department of Physics at Stanford University is inviting applications for a postdoctoral research associate position to participate in two long baseline neutrino experiments: MINOS and NOvA, utilizing one neutrino beam from Fermilab and two separate detectors in northern Minnesota.

The MINOS experiment is designed to study neutrino oscillations in the “atmospheric” delmsq region, through numu disappearance, numu to nue transition and depletion of NC events. The Far Detector is a multi-kiloton magnetic iron/scintillator spectrometer in the Soudan mine in Minnesota, some 735 km away. The first results on numu disappearance and search for sterile neutrinos, based on the initial data sets, have been published already and the first results on nue appearance have been presented at the recent conferences. The current emphasis in the analysis
efforts is to refine all of these measurements with a much larger data sample based on 7E20 protons on target. In addition, starting this fall, we shall commence a dedicated run with muon antineutrinos.

A fully-funded PhD position in the School of Biological Sciences

A fully-funded PhD position in the School of Biological Sciences, Bangor University, is available under the supervision of Dr Anita Malhotra to start in autumn 2009. Part funded by the European Social Fund and Tropical Forest Products (one of Britain’s biggest bee farmers and importers of Fairtrade honey, based in Ceredigion, Wales).

The studentship will waive fees and include an annual stipend beginning at £13,290, and support for consumables, equipment and travel worth £4000/yr, will contribute to the project.

The PhD student will assist with a breeding program to select for a locally adapted bee stock that has innate disease resistance, yet retains commercially valuable characteristics.

The work will include genetic characterisation of colonies and virgin queens/drones for breeding, gathering and analysing data on colony characteristics to guide selection, testing robust techniques for
assessing colony performance, longitudinal studies of colonies to dissect contributory factors to overwintering mortality and spontaneous queenlessness.

The PhD student will therefore become familiar with beekeeping practice as well as genetic techniques; some previous experience in one or both areas would be an advantage but is not essential. This PhD studentship will be at the heart of a planned collaborative team based at Bangor and Aberystwyth Universities investigating other aspects of honeybee genetics and health using multidisciplinary, leading-edge and innovative techniques.

Role Models for the Next Generation

Faculty for the Future fellowships are awarded to women from developing and emerging economies who are preparing for PhD or post-doctoral study in the physical sciences, engineering, or related disciplines to pursue advanced graduate study at top universities in their disciplines abroad.

Launched by the Schlumberger Foundation in 2004, Faculty for the Future has grown to become a community of 110 women from 35 countries.

The long-term goal of the Faculty for the Future program is to generate conditions that result in more women pursuing scientific disciplines. Grant recipients are therefore selected as much for their leadership capabilities as for their scientific talents, and they are expected to return to their home countries to continue their academic careers and inspire other young women.

Faculty for the Future grants are in the range of USD 25,000 to 50,000 per year, and may be renewed through to completion of studies subject to performance, self-evaluation, and recommendations from supervisors. The amount of the grant depends on the actual costs of studying and living in the chosen location.

  • Am I eligible to apply if I’m preparing for a master’s degree?
    No. Only students who are planning to prepare for, or who are already enrolled on, a PhD or a post-doc course can apply for an FFTF grant.

  • Am I eligible to apply if I have already started my PhD or post-doc?
    Yes, you can apply even if you have already started your PhD or post-doc.

  • Am I eligible to apply if I am already living in a developed country?
    If you are a citizen from a developing or emerging country but resident in a developed country for the purpose of studying, you are eligible to apply.

  • Am I eligible to apply even if I plan to pursue my PhD or post-doc in my home university?
    The FFTF program aims to give the opportunity to scientific women from developing and emerging countries to pursue a PhD or a post-doc in the best universities abroad. However we sometimes accept “sandwich programs” where students spend only a part of the grant year in a university abroad.

  • Am I eligible to apply if I plan to pursue my PhD or post-doc in a university of another developing or emerging country?
    The FFTF program aims to give the opportunity to scientific women from developing and emerging countries to pursue PhD or post-doc in the best universities abroad. If you’ve been accepted in a university of excellence you are eligible, even if it’s not in a developed country.

  • Is there a list of host universities accredited to the FFTF program?
    No. However, we encourage you to apply to the best universities abroad in your discipline. The university you will be accepted in will be taken into account in the decision process.

  • Which disciplines are eligible?
    Eligible applicants are those preparing for PhD or post-doc study in the physical sciences or related technologies. Please see

  • I plan to apply for a PhD or post-doc next year; should I apply for the FFTF grant now or next year?
    You are eligible to apply now. If you apply before the first year of study, you are allowed to begin your course and consequently to receive your grant funding until the spring of the following year. For example, if you apply in 2009, you will know the award results in spring 2010. If grant recipients have not commenced study by spring semester 2011, the grant award expires.

  • Is it a mandatory requirement of the grant to return home and to pursue an academic career? Am I eligible to apply if I don’t have any faculty position yet in my home country?
    We do not require any document certifying that you will have a faculty position when you return to your home country after completing your studies. However, during the application process—new or renewal—we look closely at evidence of your commitment to return home and the level of your relationship with your home-country university[ies]. The quality of this evidence has a significant impact on the likelihood of winning or renewing an award.

  • How many years is the grant typically renewable for?
    Grants may be renewed through to completion of your PhD or post-doc—subject to performance, self-evaluation, and recommendations from supervisors (preferably host and home).

  • Is it necessary to provide the diploma and letter of admittance from my university in English? Is it necessary to make notarial attestations?
    No, it’s not mandatory.

  • Is there an age limit?
    No. Women of any age are eligible to apply. However, in our selection process we do consider the number of active teaching years remaining after the PhD or post-doc has been acquired.

  • If I bring my family with me to the host country, will the Schlumberger foundation financially support them?
    FFTF grants are based on actual expenses to be incurred by the student only. Expenses typically include tuition and required university fees, an estimation of accommodation costs, a living allowance (for food, books, and supplies, medical/insurance cover, childcare, transport costs), and a budget for travel, visa, and conference expenses. This can be up to USD 50,000 per year.

  • After submitting my application online, can I access and modify it before the closing date?
    You can update your application and save it as often as you like before submitting it. Once you’ve submitted it you cannot change it anymore. Your referees will then receive a notification e-mail.

  • I've just submitted my application, what else am I expected to do?
    When will I be informed of the selection results?

    You should wait for results to be delivered. The results are usually available on the application Web site by the end of March every year. Awarded applicants will then receive a personal e-mail. Unsuccessful applicants will usually receive a formal letter by end of April.

  • How are grant recipients selected?
    The selection process includes five rounds:
    • First round: Is based on compliance with eligibility criteria such as country of origin, discipline and overall quality of application. Noncompliant applications are eliminated.

    • Second round: The first shortlist is reviewed based on scoring of the following criteria:
      - academic performance
      - quality of references
      - scientific interest of research proposal
      - commitment to teaching
      - relevance of research to home country
      - commitment to inspiring young woman into the sciences
      - quality of host-country university

    • Third round: The second shortlist is reviewed by the Schlumberger Foundation scientific committee with a focus on quality of research proposal, scientific interest and relevance to home country.

    • Fourth round: The final shortlist of candidates is interviewed by telephone by members of the Schlumberger Foundation Board of Trustees.

    • Final round: Selection of grant recipients by foundation board and executive director.

  • Why is a particular candidate not selected?
    The competition is intense for a limited number of awards. We cannot engage in individual correspondence nor give individual reasons for not receiving a grant.

    In addition to completion, applications are typically unsuccessful due to the following reasons:
    • Poor quality, incomplete application (especially in the personal essay and project statement sections).
    • Unmet eligibility criteria.
    • Insufficient evidence of commitment to return to home country or to teach.
    • Level of qualification (the Schlumberger Foundation only funds PhD and post-doctorate programs).

    Faculty for the Future seeks to have an impact on gender balance in science disciplines by reinforcing the presence and qualifications of women university teachers in developing and emerging economies. Probabilistic network reconstruction from RNAi data in the framework of graphical models; experimental design of RNAi screens; network analysis and comparison.

Successful applicants have a strong background in computational biology, mathematics, computer science, statistics, physics, or a related field, and exposure to modeling biological systems. Candidates are expected to engage in interdisciplinary research groups and to foster collaborations with biologists and bioengineers.

Description:

In the framework of the iPLAN European project the aim of this thesis is to enhance the computational efficiency and to adjust the complexity-accuracy trade-off of the MR-FDPF (Multi-Resolution Frequency Domain Partial Flows) method for indoor radio coverage prediction. This method, particularly efficient for indoor propagation, is devoted to be implemented in a radio
network planning tool. This tool needs to propose all kind of modern radio link conditions: indoor, outdoor, indoor to outdoor, outdoor to indoor, for 3G/4G, WLAN or WMAN (WiMax), from macrocells to femtocells.

Thus, the study will contain four main parts:

-computational efficiency enhancement of the MR-FDPF method;
-implementation of statistical analysis of radio channel behaviour
rather than only considering mean power level;
-integration of our indoor propagation tool into a wide areas
simulation tool with other propagation methods such as ray-tracing in
collaboration with other partners;
-measurement campaigns and model calibration.

The PhD candidate will work the first year in the CITI Lab of INSA Lyon in order to propose all possible enhancements on the MR-FDPF method and will be associated to the SWING INRIA project team (at INSA Lyon, France). Then he will spend two years seconded in Ranplan Wireless Network Design Ltd, partnet of the iPLAN project (located in Luton, UK). Ranplan's R&D department is expected to launch an automatic planning tool, and the results of this work will contribute to this innovating tool.

Redesigned in collaboration with CEOs and HR Directors across Europe, BuAdd Newsiness School Lausanne´s new MBA aims to develop future leaders equipped to address tomorrow´s business challenges. BSL is ranked in the top fifth of the QS Global 200 Business Schools 2009 listing.

The Future Leader Scholarship award may be applied to the BSL Executive MBA, Full-time MBA or Flex-MBA degree program. The Executive MBA takes place on Saturdays and is completed in 1½ years. The full-time and flex programs follow a modular format, with the full-time being completed in 1 year. Multi-level assessment of ocean-climate dynamics: a gateway to interdisciplinary training and analysis
GATEWAYS invites applications* * for

15 Early-Stage Researchers (ESR) at the PhD student level The GATEWAYS project conducts interdisciplinary climate change research on the ocean circulation and its linking with climate processes on regional to global scales. The project combines modern observations, climate (ocean, atmosphere) modelling and marine palaeoclimatology. GATEWAYS sets out to test the sensitivity of the ocean circulation to changing climates of the past. It will assess the dynamics of the ocean circulation as a function of climate change; the influence of ocean circulation on continental climate; and the impact of inter-ocean water transports on the basin- wide overturning circulation.

The project provides training in laboratory-based analytical protocols and instrumentation, data processing and management, and numerical climate modelling. Complementary skills training focuses on project management and communication techniques. Trainees receive an integrated interdisciplinary grounding in the marine and climate sciences; proficiency in analytical procedures, climate modelling and statistical data processing; managerial skills to design and carry out research in an efficient and pragmatic way.
